Welcome to Emma's Story. It all began in June of 2008 when my husband and I found out that our family of four was going to become a family of five. Things took a drastic turn, however, when in September of 2008 our baby girl was diagnosed with anencephaly.
We had people across the world praying for us and for Emma that God would provide us with a miracle and that baby Emma would be born alive and be able to spend just a few moments with us. However, Heavenly Father had a different plan in mind and Emma died during labor and was born in the evening of the 15th of January.
However, we have learned that the true miracle lies in the Atonement of our Savior Jesus Christ and in eternal families.

What is Anencephaly?
Anencephaly is a defect in the closure of the neural tube during fetal development. The neural tube is a narrow channel that folds and closes between the 3rd and 4th weeks of pregnancy to form the brain and spinal cord of the embryo. Anencephaly occurs when the "cephalic" or head end of the neural tube fails to close, resulting in the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp. Infants with this disorder are born without a forebrain (the front part of the brain) and a cerebrum (the thinking and coordinating part of the brain). The remaining brain tissue is often exposed--not covered by bone or skin. A baby born with anencephaly is usually blind, deaf, unconscious, and unable to feel pain. Although some individuals with anencephaly may be born with a rudimentary brain stem, the lack of a functioning cerebrum permanently rules out the possibility of ever gaining consciousness. Reflex actions such as breathing and responses to sound or touch may occur.

So sweet! What a tear jerker! Isn't it wonderful to have such a perfect precious child be part of your family forever? Congratulations on her arrival and well wishes for you and your family through your grieving.

I don't know who you are but I am a friend of Caroline Shillig and found your blog through hers. I have followed your story for awhile and want to tell you thank you so much for your unwavering faith and strength. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings with everyone. Although, not many of us are going through the exact same trial you guys are, everyone is still going through their own trials and challenges and I think we need to see examples like you who endure through some of life's toughest times with such faith and trust in the Lord. Thank you. I know that this is not the last time that you will see your precious little Emma and I think she will be very excited to one day be held, loved and cared for by her mommy again!
As I sit here crying my eyes out my heart and prayers go out to you! YOu don't know me either, I am friends with Caroline Shillig and I too have been following your blog for a while. That song was almost too much for me to listen too! It was SO beautiful, I knew I was going to tear up as soon as I heard those first few piano cords and saw her name. Her little hands and feet, really everything about her is perfect. I loved the pics with your boys and how Benjamin couldn't keep his eyes off of her. I'm sure that's how it was for all of you, just drinking her in so you'll remember. Thank heavens for photography. And now I'm going to go and add my vote for your well-deserved makeover! (After I can actually see through dry eyes)
